Day One at National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association 50th Annual Awards Ceremony was quite a thrill for Tonya and I. This is my third trip to Salisbury, North Carolina and my third NSSA Indiana Sportscaster of the Year award. To represent the Hoosier state with the talent we have, at so many broadcast levels it is a bit humbling to be the lone recipient from Indiana. We flew in from Indianapolis early Saturday and were welcomed by 85 degrees temperatures. How bout that! It has been neat to get a chance to spend some time with Terry Hutchens and his lovely wife Susan. Terry is this years Sportswriter of the Year from Indiana. Terry a second time winner writes for the Indianapolis Star. The folks in Salisbury are just amazing group of people. The host families, the NSSA board, and the many sponsors all have the gift of hospitality! It is southern hospitality at its best. The three hour get to know pre-dinner event is just and awesome way to get to know the other state winners, our national award winner, and the NSSA board. Cassandra Barrier and Barb Lockert have gone to no expense to make sure this is a first class event! The amazing work ethic those women bring to this event is remarkable.
The after dinner Q and A session with Marty Brennaman (Reds), Jim Simpson (NBC), and Leigh Montville (Boston Globe/Sports Illustrated) was just a great time had by all! Those guys were candid, funny, and informative. Getting to me many of the guys was just a great experience. There body of work as sportscasters and sportswriters are as good as it gets. Looking for more great things today...
