Friday Night Lights started off well for the Chicago Bliss, and the LFL. There was a tailgate party just like at any other game. You can take the man out of the game, but you can't take the tailgate party out of the man.

There was a Bliss-stirring opening ceremony after which Chicago won the toss, elected to receive, and scored on that opening drive. But this was a short field, fast paced, high scoring style of game - the type that could come down to the last possession. Could any defense hold?

The Caliente were a big favorite. The Miami area takes its women's football seriously. When they came out for preGame it was easy to think that the Bliss were in trouble. They were dressed to the nines - ready for the hunt. David vs Goliath: lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Muscles a ripple, and paraphrasing one of Bill Cosby's 60s routines: bricks falling off buildings, parents taking kids off the streets.

Chicago came out with excitement and an adrenaline Rush, thanks to a preGame pep talk by the man, the myth, the legend - Coach Mike Ditka. Mr. Chicago is becoming a part of the new venture. Tis football. Doesn't matter who, how, or why, it's still THE game. Can they play? As he said, "When both sides are on an equal footing, it's competitive."

Was it a dainty game? No. One player on each side was ejected late in the first half. Two Miami players were helped off the field. A bliss lineman gave a shot to the mouth to her counterpart. Boarding was ferocious and the thumps could be heard from the upper level. Please, Mr. Custer, I don't want to go!

In the end it was quickness and agility that did in Goliath. Miami's QB had a gun for an arm, but receivers were defended well. And in a Coppertone commercial moment the Bliss put the game away with a TD at the 0:37 mark of the second half. Final score: Bliss 29, Caliente 19.

Was it fun? Check the smiles on the faces of both the players and fans. Was it football? Yes, in what other game do you leave skin and blood on the carpet.

The future plans are to expand. But even though it was nationally broadcast, viability remains with fan attendance. I would estimate the crowd at about 3,500.

Hey guys, don't go to the game with just your buddies. Take the wife/girlfriend along and the next time she complains about something insignificant ask her if she can block and tackle and still look good when she gets up off the floor. (sorry ladies, don't really mean that)
