This past weekend, I spent some time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh is the home of the defending Super Bowl Champion Steelers as well as the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins. Believe it or not, there is another professional sports team in town, kinda. That would be the Pirates of Major League Baseball. Although anyone who has followed baseball over the past ten plus seasons may disagree, baseball does exist in Pittsburgh. The Pirates have basically been a Triple-A team playing in the National League. Every year, the Pirates unload their best talent in July to contenders (see Jason Bay, Ian Snell, Jack Wilson, etc.) and gracefully take their place right next to the Washington Nationals as the worst team in the league.

Why even bring up the Pirates? The sports climate in Pittsburgh is outstanding. People love sports (even the Pirates). Obviously, the Steelers and the Penguins have made major investments to become champions. When will the Pirates front office say "no more" to being doormats? They play in a beautiful stadium, they have great support (even when they're 54-82), and the city loves sports. Whether it's the Pitt Panthers, the Penguins, the Steelers, or the Pirates, many people were wearing the logo of their favorite local sports team.

It's time for the Pirates to step up and join the rest of their colleagues in professional sports and bring home the hardware. As Coach Geesman says, it starts at the top and works its way down. The days of Jake Taylor rallying the Cleveland Indians to "win the whole (freaking) thing" despite owner Rachel Phelps wanting the team to lose only exist in the movies. Commitment to excellence; if you are unfamiliar with this concept, walk down the road to Heinz Field or Mellon Arena, they've been there, done that, and won the trophy.
