Southeastern Women’s Basketball Shuts Down Warner Created 1/5/2014 10:57:21 AM
LAKELAND, Fla.- It’s a pretty impressive feat to hold a team to just three second half field goals.
It’s even more impressive when the team you’re playing is in first place in the conference and riding a nine-game winning streak.
The Fire (7-6, 1-1 TSC) outscored Warner (11-2, 2-1 TSC) 45-24 in the second half en route to an 80-58 victory over the Royals.
“We played the best half of defense we’ve played all year,” said coach Drew Watson. “I felt like we did what we wanted to do on defense and it paid off.”
The Fire found their stride early, grabbing a 13-6 lead on a three-pointer by freshman Bailey Hooker with 12:42 left in the first half. Emma Loucks gave the Fire a nine-point lead with a shot from long range at the 11:57 mark to lead 16-7.
Southeastern lead 28-18 with 4:03 remaining in the half, but the Royals whittled it all the way down to one at the end of the half, outscoring the Fire 16-7 to close the half.
Then, the defense took over.
SEU expanded their lead to 11, using a 12-2 run in the first 3:30 to go up 47-36. Later in the half, the Fire went on a 10-0 run to hold a 26-point advantage with 6:12 to play.
Finally, with 4:07 left in the contest, the Royals got their first field goal of the half on a layup by Nirva Lamy. Their other two field goals came with 2:04 and :41 remaining.
Kristen Scholl led the Fire with 14 points and also had three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. “Kristen was very efficient for us, and she helped us execute our defensive game plan,” said Watson.
Alyssa Ramos added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. Hooker also added 12 points to go along with four rebounds and four blocks.
The Fire return to Sun Conference play on Monday when they travel to St. Thomas University.
