he Lady Pilots returned to the court for the first time in 2014 as they traveled to Winona Lake on Saturday afternoon to face off with the Lady Lancers of Grace College. A game of spurts resulted with Grace edging out Bethel by a score of 73-66 which gave the Lady Pilot program their first loss in the Orthopedic Capital Center since it became the Lancer's home court during the 2007-08 season.
The Lady Pilots jumped out to a substantial 16-7 lead with 12:20 remaining on the clock in the first half, but the next run belonged to Grace as they went on a 13-4 spurt to tie the contest at 20. Grace continued to chip away at the Lady Pilots, who were again plagued with foul trouble, and built a nine point lead by intermission. The first half woes for the Lady Pilots included 13 team fouls, six missed free throws, and being outrebounded by 11.
Like a carbon copy of the first half, it was BC who started out hot and created the game's third tie at the 15:58 mark on two made free throws by freshman Angelique Moore. Moments later, junior Ashley Lutz gave the Lady Pilots their first lead of the second half when she converted on an and-one lay up to put BC up 43-40. The lead did not last as Grace's Juaneice Jackson and Allison Kauffman put in back-to-back buckets to take the lead. Even though Bethel kept things close, they never recaptured the lead and surrendered the contest by a final score of 73-66.
Moore led BC with 19 points and 9 rebounds while Erin Hunt added 13 by hitting four out of five three-point attempts. Lutz was the only other Lady Pilot to reach double figures by adding 10.
Bethel falls to 7-9 on the season and is now 2-2 in Crossroads League play. League play will continue for BC on Wednesday, January 8th when they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on the top-ranked team in NAIA DII, the Cougars of St. Francis. Tip-off is set for 7PM.
